April 26 - Commonwealth Games England (CGE) have launched a new competition that will let the nation decide which anthem will be played at this year’s Commonwealth Games in Delhi by allowing the public to vote online for the song of their choice.

Voters can choose between the three anthems: God Save The Queen, Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory although they are also able to make their own song suggestions.

The winner of the YouGov poll will become the official anthem of the England team and will be played on the podium in Delhi each time a gold medal is won by the country.

Land of Hope and Glory, which was written by Edward Elgar, is the anthem currently used but that was criticised during the Commonwealth Games at Manchester in 2002 by Jonathan Edwards.

The world record holder for the triple jumper claimed after his victory that it was "anachronistic and imperialistic".

The winning anthem will also be used during the Official Welcoming Ceremony in Delhi when the St. George’s flag is raised.

Similar competitions have been launched by Scotland and New Zealand.

Duncan Lewis, the marketing Director for CGE, said: "We’re really excited that the nation will be deciding our anthem for the Games.

"Everybody has their own opinion on what should be played and having the public actively involved in the team’s decision making is great.

"Their involvement represents everything that we’re trying to achieve with our inclusive ‘We Are England’ brand – bringing the whole of the country together."
