December 2 - India's opposition party, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), today accused the Government of corruption on infrastructure projects linked to the Commonwealth Games 2010 because they want to ensure that the event is a success.

Vijay Kumar Malhotra, the leader of the BJP in the Delhi Assembly and a senior vice-president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), claimed that the Government was responsible for the "inordinate delays" in building the facilities and infrastructure necessary to stage next year's Games and were now "mindlessly" spending money on the project to make up for lost time.

Malhotra said: "Massive corruption is taking place in all the projects being implemented by the Delhi Government.

"Now the Government is ready to spend any amount of money to ensure national prestige."

Malhotra, who is also President of the Indian Archery Federation, claimed that Comptroller and Auditor General in its report had already found financial irregularities in implementation of various projects.

He said: "Cost of the projects has increased three-four times.

"Who is responsible for it?

"Is it not corruption?

"The Government is now increasing cost of most of the projects which will only benefit the builders and contractors."

Malhotra has been a long-time critic of preparations for the Games and last month revealed that he feared the fact India were so far behind in getting ready that the facilities would end up being sub-standard and it would lead to corruption.

Malhotra also warned that Delhi will huge embarrassment during the Games because of the "pathetic traffic and law and order situation".

He said: "The pathetic condition of the slums and these colonies will be exposed to the outside world."
