November 28 - India today again promised that New Delhi will stage a successful Commonwealth Games during a presentation at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Port-of-Spain.

Suresh Kalmadi (pictured), the chairman of the Delhi organising committee, and Sindushree Khullar, from the Indian Sports Ministry, gave a detailed report on preparations and outlined the benefits of the Games being held in the country for the first time.

The special breakfast event was hosted by Trinidad & Tobago Prime Minister Patrick Manning and among those who attended were Jamaica Prime Minister Bruce Golding, Australia Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong along with the Sports Ministers from Commonwealth nations.

Commonwealth Secretary Kamlesh Sharma and Commonwealth Games Federation officials, including President Michael Fennell, were also present to hear Khullar elaborate on the roles and responsibilities, financial support, venue updates, Games Village, tourist arrivals and accommodation, volunteer programme, preparedness, legacy and the Queen's Baton Relay.

Kalmadi listed some benefits of the Games like the creation of 2.5 million jobs and the economic impact of approximately $4.5 million (£2.7 million) for India over a period from 2008 to 2012, investment in green infrastructure, pro-active waste management, greening and offset and green ceremonies.

Kalmadi said: "Environment is a critical component today.

"We will strive towards reducing the carbon footprint to establish the first green Commonwealth Games and set a benchmark for all future multi-disciplinary events."
