July 23 - Contracts have been awarded to demolish Michael Reese Hospital, the proposed site of Olympic Village if Chicago's bid to follow London 2012 and host the Games in 2016 is successful, it was announced today.

The the Public Building Commission’s (PBC) Board of Commissioners revaled the award of two additional contracts for the demolition of nearly all of the structures on the property.

On June 12, the PBC issued bid documents for the demolition of four groups of buildings consisting of a total of 24 structures on the Michael Reese Hospital campus.

Since the City of Chicago purchased the former Michael Reese Hospital property, $12.7 million (£7.6 million) in contracts have been awarded with approximately 50 per cent of these contract dollars being committed to minority, disability and women-owned businesses, officials claimed.

Pat Ryan, the chairman and chief executive of Chicago 2016, said: “We are excited about our plans for the Olympic Village because it will leave a great legacy for our city - a new residential and retail community that will benefit the people who live in the surrounding neighborhoods and across the city.

"With today’s announcement, we are already realising the positive benefits of this project, including the participation of minority-owned businesses and local workers.”

The PBC manages construction and renovation projects for the City of Chicago and its other sister agencies.

Mayor Richard M. Daley serves as the PBC’s chairman.
