MAY 3 - BRITAIN'S preparations for the 2012 Olympics could receive a boost after one of the sport's all-time greats announced he is to base himself here during the build-up.

Kosei Inoue (pictured), Japan's Sydney Olympic gold medallist, has said that he plans to move to the Budokwai club in London in the autumn to study to become a judo instructor.

Inoue won the gold medal in the 100-kilogram class in 2000 and also claimed three consecutive titles at the World Championships.

He was appointed the captain of Japan's team at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, where he also carried the flag during the opening ceremony, but failed to defend his title.

Inoue, 29, had hoped to qualify for a third Olympics in Beijing but decided to retire after being beaten in the quarter-finals of the All Japan Judo Championship on Tuesday and failed to earn a stop on the team.

Although he plans to base himself in London, Inoue will probably travel round the country passing on tips to youngsters.
