alt The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) has hired Mike English, a five-time national shooting champion, as its new chief of sport performance, they announced today.

English will take over for Steve Roush, who resigned earlier this year.

English had been in the position on an interim basis since Roush left in January.

English works with national governing bodies and their athletes to ensure good training conditions and logistics, both at home and when the US team goes to the Olympics.

The USOC sport division has been undergoing a streamlining since the end of the Beijing Olympics, though English said that reorganisation and his promotion have not changed the overall mission.

He said: "Sustaining competitive excellence is still the main goal.

"It doesn't mean we're trying to address anything that's broken.

"We're just trying to improve where we can, be more efficient."

English has been with the USOC since 2004.

He worked as a key assistant for Roush, whose efforts helped the US win 110 medals at the Beijing Olympic last year.

Starting in 2005, English directed the Olympic training centers and helped develop the USOC's athlete recovery centre and the Eye on Performance, an advanced system of cameras and recorders that gives athletes nearly instantaneous feedback about their training performances.

His promotion is viewed by some as a needed dose of continuity during a period of upheaval at the USOC, punctuated by turnover in Roush's position, as well as at chairman and chief executive.

Also today, new chief executive Stephanie Streeter picked Desiree Filippone to be the USOC's new director of Government relations and John McWilliams the new chief human resources officer.
