altSEPTEMBER 25 - Four teams have been shortlisted to build the £245 million Athletes Village for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, it was announced today.

The four consortiums were officially ratified by Glasgow City Council this morning (Thursday) and will begin a competitive dialogue process for the top job.

The Council is expected to refine the shortlist to two by the end of the year and announce the successful bidder by summer 2009.

The Commonwealth Games village is to include up to 1,500 homes to accomodate 8,000 athlets from 71 countries and will be built in Glasgow’s East End.

The full details of the teams are:

· PPD Consortium led by developer Charles Price with Mace, Caledonian Building, Woogar Hunter, DTZ, Ian Simpson Architects, Reiach and Hall Architects, Elder and Cannon Architects, Nord Architecture and Murray Dunlop Architects

· Gladedale Consortium with Bellway Homes and Citta Property Group

· City Legacy Consortium led by Davis Langdon with RMJM, Cruden Estates, MacTaggart & Mickel, Citybuilding and CCG

· Broadway Malyan Consortium with Arup, Drivers Jonas and New City Vision

Around 70 firms submitted expressions of interest earlier this year when the project was announced.

The short-list was announced at a time when John Armitt, the chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority, admitted that Lend Lease, who are building the Village for 2012, were struggling to raise finance for the project because of the credit crunch.

But Ian Baird, of Gladedale, said that he believed the situation would improve soon so this project would not suffer the same problems.

He said: "We've got to look ahead on the basis that the market will recover.

"Let's face it, if it's not recovered by 2014 then we're all doomed.

"It's fair to say we wouldn't be speculatively starting to build it tomorrow, but we're very excited by the prospect of building it when the market bounces back."
