Sochi 2014_biathlon_venueJanuary 25 - A test event for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi next month will be closed to the public due to construction delays, it was revealed today.

The Cup of Russia event due to be held on the biathlon course on the crests and slopes of Psekhako Ridge in Krasnaya Polyana between February 6 and 10 will take place behind closed doors, Vadim Melikhov, the vice-president of the Russian Biathlon Union, admitted.

"The facility isn't finished, the facility is still being built, although the important things have been done," Vadim Melikhov told RIA Novosti, the Russian news agency.

The facilities at the Sochi Biathlon and Ski Complex for the 120 competitors expected to take part are mostly ready but those being built for the spectators still have to be completed.

"Part of the main building is in use, where all the biathlon services will be located," said Melikhov.

The event is lacking most of the world's top competitors, including Russia's 26 top-ranked biathletes, because of events elsewhere.

But Vladimir Barnashov, Russia's national coach, claimed that the fact the event is closed to the public is still a blow.

"Almost all the athletes who aren't involved in international races such as the World Cup and the IBU Cup are taking part in Sochi," he said.

"It is our job to test the course, not just by the athletes but by the service teams too."
