women boxing_in_skirts_17-01-12January 23 - It remains unclear as to whether or not female boxers will be given the choice to wear shorts or skirts at the London 2012 Olympic Games despite the Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA) Technical and Rules Commission having made a formal recommendation on the issue at their meeting in Bangkok this weekend.

All seven AIBA Commissions met in the Thai capital where the Technical and Rules Commission, chaired by Franco Falcinelli, made recommendations to the AIBA Executive Committee on the controversial skirts issue.

But AIBA have said that the internal recommendations will not be made public and only if a decision is made by the Executive Committee, will it be announced by the organisation.

"The AIBA will not reveal the content of internal discussions within any of its Commissions," an AIBA spokesman told insidethegames.

"The AIBA staff is just back from Bangkok and will now summarise all recommendations that were made.

"Those will then run by AIBA President [C K Wu] and AIBA Executive Director (Ho Kim) before they are sent to the AIBA Executive Committee Bureau, who can make a decision anytime on behalf of the Executive Committee.

"If a decision has to be made, and thus officialised, it will be in a few weeks' time."

Given that AIBA President Wu will play a large role in proceedings on the issue, it is unlikely that female boxers will be forced to wear skirts after he confirmed to insidethegames at the end of last year that "the most likely decision is that the uniform will be optional for women".

"Some [female boxers] like skirts and some don't like skirts so I think we should keep the freedom for the athletes," said Wu, a strong supporter of women's boxing and a man who played a major role in getting it on to the Olympic sporting programme in his capacity as an International Olympic Committee (IOC) member.

"It has become a very hot issue in the media but some of the reports are wrong because we have never made skirts compulsory or mandatory for women at all."

Women's boxing will make its official Olympic debut at London 2012 but the controversial issue of forcing women to wear skirts has dominated the lead up to the event.
