London 2012_bells_with_Arlene_Phillips_November_4_2011November 4 - People across the United Kingdom will wake to the sound of bells being rung, at 8:00 BST next year on July 27, the day of the Opening Ceremony of London 2012, as loudly as possible for three minutes, it was officially announced today.

London 2012 hope that as many people as possible will be involved, thus forming part of a work by Turner Prize winning artist Martin Creed.

People across the country are encouraged to find bells, be they in churches or towns, or hand and bicycle bells, and to sign up at www.allthebells.com or via www.london2012.com/festival.

The project was announced at a special attended by Creed and Arlene Phillips, one of Britain's top choreographers, as historically bells have been rung as special moments, from the times of the Romans through to the World Wars of the 20th century.

Those wanting to be involved can register to be part of the ringing at bell towers, and Creed encouraged the public to sign up, saying that "it's by people and for people.

"On the morning of the opening of the Games it's a massive signal that something is happening."

The work forms part of the London 2012 Festival, the programme for which was confirmed today, and is funded by the National Lottery through the Olympic Lottery Distributor.

Cultural Olympiad director Ruth Mackenzie said: "The commission shows the festival's commitment to world class artists and to the values of participation.

"Martin Creed's wonderful idea gets everyone involved in the opening day of the Games, not just as an audience but as an integral part of the work."
