Local media reported that the 21-year-old Jeju United defender, who has made nine appearances for the senior team, was taken to talk to prosecutors.

"Hong told us last Friday that he had nothing to do with the case," a K-League official was quoted as saying by local media.

Prosecutors believe that the skipper was involved in his club's 5-1 loss to FC Seoul last year.

Eleven players have been charged in connection with the inquiry, and one was found having committed suicide.

An amnesty has been in force recently for players to come forward and admit involvement with the betting ring in exchange for more lenient penalties.

The Government has threatened the League with closure if it does not tackle the crisis sufficiently.
