Panathinaikos_Maccabi_Tel_Aviv_basketballMay 10 - The O2 Arena in London could host the 2013 Euroleague finals as a result of its hosting of NBA games, it has been reported.

Euroleague President Jorgi Bertomeu told BBC World Service: "We would love to hold it in London.

"We already are working on this project.

"We want to increase the popularity of our game there.

"They have an unbelievably good building, the O2.

"I cannot deny that we have had talks with our friends from AEG to see if it's possible to organise the Final Four in the O2 in London.

"We have already had good experiences with AEG in Berlin and Paris.

"I am confident this event will be in London in the near future."

Bertomeu hopes that by playing the final in London, interest among the British public in basketball could increase with the sport's profile raised.

Euroleague, is the highest level tier and most important professional club basketballcompetition in Europe, with teams from up to 18 different countries taking part.

The current champions are Greece's Panathinaikos, who triumphed at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy in Paris.

Another team linked to a famous football club, Real Madrid, have won the tournament the most, with eight victories.

This year's finals are due to be held at the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona.

With Britain putting a team forward for the 2012 Olympics, hosting the Euroleague finals would help boos the legacy of basketball post the Olympic Games in the country.

"London and the UK is a very challenging market for basketball," admitted Bertomeu.

"We definitely want to increase the popularity of our game there.

"In London there is a very important group of fans that loves basketball.

"It is a destination where everyone wants to go."
