Momodou_DibbaFebruary 13 - Momodou Dibba (pictured) has been elected as the new President of the Gambia National Olympic Association (GNOC) following controversial elections overshadowed by the arrest of International Olympic Committee (IOC) Beatrice Allen.

Dibba, the President of the Gambia Draught Federation, beat his only rival Abdoulie Touray, the former secretary general of the GNOC, in the first contested election for the position.

The post was vacated last July when Lang Tombong Tamba, also chief of defence staff for Gambia's armed forces, was sentenced to death for his alleged role in a 2009 coup to oust the Government.

But the election could yet still come under the scrutiny of the IOC after several sports associations in Gambia boycotted the elections because they claim Touray was not being treated fairly.

They had warned in the build-up to the election that the Gambian Government were risking getting the country suspended from London 2012 if they are suspected of interfering.

Allen, who had been the Aciting President since Tamba was forced to step down, had been arrested last month along with GNOC treasurer Ousman Wadda and accounts officer Muhammed Janneh on allegations of embezzlement.

All three have denied the charges and Allen has claimed in an affidavit that they being targeted because of their intention to report what she called the mismanagement of $100,000 (£62,000) by the GNOC during the build-up to last year's Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.

Dibba, who was the former secretary general of the Gambia Football Association, has pledged to create a sports development fund as a matter of priority and to build a multi-purpose sports facility to cater for the smaller sports associations.

He also promised to give sport in Gambian schools a higher priority.

"My sport development agenda ... is to focus my attention on the sporting associations, in particular for athletes to develop and excel in their various sporting disciplines, to ensure that GNOC takes full responsibility to regularise the associations' annual contributions to their respective international federations to enable them to have a platform in meetings, conferences and seminars in these international bodies," said Dibba.
