The Wrestling World Qualifiers for Paris 2024, held in Istanbul, Turkiye from 9-12 May, was the last chance for wrestlers to secure their country's presence at the Olympic Games. The two finalists and the best of the third places won the Olympic licence.

Individual athletes from Russia won 4 quotas in the Greco-Roman style. Sadik Lalaev (60 kg), Sergei Kutuzov (77 kg), and Artur Sargsian (97 kg) all reached the final of the tournament, ensuring a 5-man team presence at Paris 2024. Individual athletes from Belarus Kiryl Maskevich  (87 kg) and Pavel Hlinchuk (130 kg) also pinned their places at the Olympic Games.

Azerbaijan won 3 quotas, which means that only the 97 kg category will not be represented in Paris. Murad Mammadov (60 kg), Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Rafig Huseynov (87 kg) and Sabah Shariati (130 kg) did their best to reach the final of the tournament and win Olympic quotas.

Former Russian Georgij Tibilov (60kg), representing Serbia, won his Olympic play-off bout against Romania's Razvan Arnaut to secure an Olympic berth in the 60 kg category. Moldova's Valentin Petic and Georgia's Ramaz Zoidze reached the 67 kg final, while Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Mohamed Elsayed of Egypt qualified at the last moment by winning his play-off bout against Kazakhstan's Din Koshkar.

2022 World runner-up Zoltan Levai (77kg) lost to Bulgaria's Aik Mnatsakanyan in the 1/8 final, but Mnatsakanyan reached the final to win the licence and Levai went through the repechage, third place bouts to reach the play-off against Kamal Bey of the USA. Levai won 3-0 to secure the final place in the 77kg category.

Big names were left out of the Olympic Games in the 87 kg category. 2022 World and European champion Turpal Bisultanov (Denmark), 2019 World champion Lasha Gobadze (Georgia) an 2019 World runner-up Alex Kessidis (Sweden) all failed to qualify for the Olympics. Polish veteran Arkadiusz Kulynycz, a bronze medallist at the 2021 World Championships, defeated Bisultanov and Gobadze to win the final qualifying spot in the weight class.

Arvi Savolainen (Finland) and Uzur Dzhuzupbekov (Kyrgyzstan) won the 97kg quota, while Alin Ciurariu (Romania) joined Shariati and Hlynchuk in the 130kg category.

In women's wrestling, Mariya Stadnik of Azerbaijan (50kg) made history by qualifying for the Olympic Games for the fifth time in her career. She is a fourth-time Olympic medallist and could be looking for a final run in Paris. Stadnik lost to North Korea's Son Hyang Kim in the semi-finals, but came back strongly in the bronze medal and Olympic play-off bouts to earn her Olympic berth. Germany's Anastasia Blayvas is the third wrestler to qualify in this weight class.

Mariana Dragutan (Moldova), Khulan Batkhuyag (Mongolia) and Zeynep Yetgil (Turkey) qualified in the 53kg category, while Olga Khoroshavtseva (Individualathlete from Russia), Giullia Oliveira (Brazil) and Aurora Russo (Italy) were the top three in the 57 kg category. Russo pinned reigning two-time European champion Alina Hrushyna (Ukraine) in the play-off bout when she was behind on the scorecard.

European champion and two-time U23 world champion Nesrin Bas (Turkey) won a quota in the 72 kg category. She was joined by Kriszta Incze (Romania) and Veranika Ivanova (Individual athlete from Belarus). Former World silver medallist Zhou Feng (China), Nisha from India and Linda Morais from Canada qualified in the 68 kg category.

The last three wrestlers to qualify were Catalina Axente (Romania), Yuliana Yaneva (Bulgaria) and Davaanasan Enkh Amar (Mongolia). The last three wrestlers to qualify were Catalina Axente (Romania), Yuliana Yaneva (Bulgaria) and Davaanasan Enkh Amar (Mongolia) in the 76 kg category.

The USA secured a full team presence in freestyle wrestling. Spencer Lee (57kg) and Zein Retherford (65kg) first won the US National Trials and then went on to win Olympic licences in their weight classes. Now the USA will have a full 6-man team in women's and freestyle wrestling at Paris 2024.

Asian champion Aman Sehrawat (India) and Wanhao Zhou (China) accompanied Lee in the 57 kg category. 2024 European champion Islam Dudaev (Albania) and 2021 World bronze medallist Tömör-Ochiryn Tulga (Mongolia) reached the final of the 65kg category, while Sujeet Kakal (India), who eliminated Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Bajrang Punia at the National Trials, remained without a quota after losing to Retherford in the play-off bout.

At least 9 wrestlers were strong contenders for Olympic berths in the 74 kg category. In the end it was three former Russians who won the quota. Four-time and reigning European champion Taimuraz Salkazanov (Slovakia) finally earned his place at the Olympic Games. Tajik newcomer Viktor Rassadin was the other finalist. He defeated Albania's Chermen Valiev in the semi-finals, but Valiev earned his quota in a play-off bout against Rio 2016 bronze medallist Soner Demirtas (Turkey). 

Fellow Tokyo 2016 bronze medallist Frank Chamizo (Italy) lost to Valiev in the quarter-finals. Other prominent wrestlers who failed to qualify in this weight class were two-time Asian champion Nurkozha Kaipanov (Kazakhstan), two-time European silver medallist Zelimkhan Khadjiev (France), former World runner-up Avtandil Kentchadze (Georgia) and World and European multiple medallist Ramazan Ramazanov (Bulgaria).

Two other former Russian athletes, Dauren Kurugliev (Greece) and Magomed Ramazanov (Bulgaria), qualified in the +86 kg category along with Vladimeri Gamkrelidze (Georgia). Erik Thiele (Germany), Zbigniew Baranowski (Poland) and Awusayiman Habila (China) all qualified in the 97 kg category. Habila defeated Rio 2016 bronze medallist Magomed Ibragimov (Uzbekistan) in the decisive bout. 

In the 125 kg category, three veteran wrestlers defeated all their young rivals to win the quota. 38-year-old former Asian champion Aiaal Lazarev (Kyrgyzstan), 36-year-old former world runner-up Deng Zhiwei (China) and 34-year-old multiple European medallist Daniel Ligeti (Hungary) will be competing in their third Olympic Games.

288 athletes have earned Olympic quotas for Paris 2024 through the 2023 World Championships, continental and world qualifiers. They will be joined by two refugee athletes in the 74 kg freestyle wrestling and 60 kg Greco-Roman wrestling categories at the Olympic Wrestling Tournament, which will be held at the Grand Palais Éphémère from 5 to 11 August.
