Cuba and Dominican Republic with three Paralympic berths in taekwondo. PATU

Following the Pan American Taekwondo Qualification Tournament in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic hosted the Paralympic Qualification Tournament on 11 April.

Four countries - Chile, Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela - qualified for the Paralympic Games Taekwondo tournament for the first time. Cuba and the Dominican Republic each qualified three athletes each. 

Constanza Fuentes (women's -65 kg) from Chile, Lilisbeth Rodriguez (women's -47 kg) from Cuba, Valeria Morales (women's -57 kg) from Ecuador, Elizabeth Geraldo (women's -52 kg) and Julio Armando Figuereo (men's +80 kg) from the Dominican Republic qualified automatically as the only competitors in their weight categories.

In the men's -80 kg, Aruba's Elliott Loonstra surprised Santiago 2023 Para Pan American Games champion Andres Molina of Costa Rica in the semi-finals but lost to Brazil's Claro Lopes de Oliviera in the final. Argentina's Miguel Galeano shocked Mexico's Ivan Torres, the Santiago 2023 Para Pan American Games champion, 14-11 in the men's -58kg final. 

Home favourite Geraldo Castro delighted the crowd with two wins, one in the men's -63kg final against Marco Antoni Mayor of Cuba. Michael Suarez and Lidia Montes, both from Cuba, also qualified in the men's -70kg and women's +65kg categories.
