Armenia to host World Weightlifting Championships in 2027, Venezuela in 2028. MINSTRY OF ESCS OF ARMENIA

Yerevan and Caracas will host the 2027 and 2028 editions of the International Weightlifting Federation's (IWF) World Championships, following a decision taken by the organisation's Executive Board at its meeting in Phuket, Thailand, on 29 March.

The Armenian capital successfully hosted the 2023 European Championships, while the Venezuelan metropolis recently organised the 2024 Pan American Weightlifting Championships. In addition to the two senior competitions, the EB also awarded the organisation of the 2026 IWF World Youth Championships to Buenos Aires, in Argentina, according to the official IWF website.

"We had two very interesting and professional candidates for our World Championships, so we naturally decided on this double award. It also brings further stability to our calendar and allows more time to prepare and successfully deliver two great competitions. After Ningbo, in China, we will travel to Europe in 2027 and to America in 2028 - three consecutive World Championships on three different continents," said IWF President Mohammed Jalood after the vote of the IWF Executive Board.

The 2027 World Championships will be one of the key qualifying events for Los Angeles 2028. Although the qualifying system for the 2028 Olympic Games is still unknown, there is no doubt that the World Championships will be a key qualifying event.

"The IWF had great concerns after the incident (with the Azerbaijani flag) during the 2023 European Championships in Yerevan, and that's why Armenia was not awarded the 2024 World Championships, and it was a big blow for Armenian sport," wrote the Armenian Prime Minister's Chief of Staff Arayik Harutyunyan on his Facebook page.

"However, after several months of hard work, we can now say that the problem has been solved. I presented our bid and it was accepted as the best," added a proud Armenian Prime Minister. This will be a unique event for Armenia, as it will be the first time that a world championship in an Olympic sport will be held in the country.
