World Table Tennis (WTT) has announced that Argentina will host its first ever WTT Series event with the addition of WTT Contender Mendoza to the calendar, following the successful hosting of the WTT Youth Contender Rosario in 2023.

This is a year of new host cities for the WTT, after the organisation announced that Chongqing had become the first city in South West China to host a WTT Series event, now comes the announcement that Mendoza will be the first city in Argentina to host a WTT Series event.

The city, famous for its cuisine and wine, will be the stage for the WTT Contender at the Aconcagua Arena from 27 May to 2 June, with a prize money of $80,000 (€74,000). Argentina already hosted the WTT Youth Contender in Rosario last year.

Federico Chiapetta, Mendoza Deputy Sports Secretary, said: "In recent years, our province has welcomed and hosted many high-level sporting events. The arrival of this international table tennis circuit demonstrates the commitment of the Mendoza government to this sport and will give both residents and visitors the opportunity to see the world's best players in this discipline".

Mendoza joins the growing list of WTT events in the Americas, following successful WTT Contenders in Lima and Rio de Janeiro, which have attracted world class table tennis players such as as Dimitrij Ovtcharov, Hugo Calderano, Shin Yubin or Hina Hayata.

Fernando Joffre, President of the Argentine Table Tennis Federation FATM), said: "This is an opportunity to showcase our athletes on an international stage and to inspire a new generation in our country."

Gonzalos Barak, WTT Manager Partnerships Sales Americas, added: "WTT Contender Mendoza is not just an event; it's a celebration of the sport's growing community in Argentina and an invitation to the world to experience the beauty and hospitality of Mendoza."

The 2024 WTT Contender Series features a calendar of at least 13 events, including five WTT Star Contender and eight WTT Contender events. These competitions will allow players to qualify for the WTT's premier events: the Grand Smashes, Champions and Finals.
