Quincy Promes keeps getting into trouble. Sentenced to 18 months in prison and ordered to pay compensation, he has a warrant out for his arrest from a court in the Netherlands and has now been arrested in Dubai for an alleged offence committed in the United Arab Emirates city.

Former Ajax and Dutch international winger Quincy Promes, who was sentenced to six years in prison in the Netherlands two weeks ago for smuggling more than a tonne of cocaine, has been arrested in Dubai for fleeing a traffic accident, according to Dutch public broadcaster NOS in a report that has also been picked up by Russian media.

Dutch prosecutors confirmed this: "We have verified the media reports about the arrest of Promes. We understand from our contact person there that Promes was arrested for a local offence and not for the Dutch case," said Franklin Wattimena, a spokesman for the public prosecutor's office.

According to NOS, Dutch prosecutors are "in talks with the UAE" about the Promes detention. Previous efforts to extradite him from Moscow were unsuccessful, and judges at the Amsterdam District Court issued a warrant for his arrest after his conviction on 14 February.

According to the court, in 2020 Promes transported a total of 1,363 kilograms of cocaine from Brazil in 2020 and, with the help of an accomplice, brought it to the Netherlands via the Belgian port of Antwerp. The cocaine was hidden in sacks of salt in containers on board a ship, some of which were intercepted by customs officials.

Promes had previously been sentenced to 18 months in prison and ordered to pay compensation for stabbing his cousin to death in a dispute over a stolen necklace.

Now playing for Spartak Moscow, Quincy Promes made 50 international matches appearances for the Netherlands, scoring seven goals and providing seven seven assists. His last game for the 'Oranjes' was in the last 16 of the Euro played in 2021. He has also played for FC Twente, Sevilla, after a €21 million transfer to Spartak in 2018, and Ajax after a €15 million transfer from Sevilla in 2019.
