The Mexican city of Acapulco hosted the 2024 Pan American Wrestling Championships from 21-24 February. Team USA won the team trophies in all three categories and took home all 10 gold medals in freestyle wrestling.

Not all of the team's strongest wrestlers competed at the championships, as most of them are preparing for the Pan American Olympic Qualifying Tournament, which begins in Acapulco in two days.

The USA freestyle squad included three athletes who have already secured a place for the USA at Paris 2024, as well as the second choices in the weight classes where they don't yet have an Olympic quota. Kyle Dake (74kg), Kyle Sneyder (97kg) and Mason Parris (125kg), all medallists at the 2023 World Championships, also won gold medals in Acapulco.

Chandler Marsteller, the back-up to world champion David Taylor, won the 86kg competition. Spencer Lee and Nicholas Lee were the best at 57 kg and 65 kg respectively. The USA still does not have an Olympic quota in these two weight categories.

The non-olympic weight categories were also dominated by the US team. Nicholas Suriano was the best in the 61 kg, Alec Pantaleo won the 70 kg, Alexander Facundo took the gold in the 79 kg and Nathan Jackson dominated in the 92 kg.

Alisha Howk (55kg), Helen Maroulis (57kg), Kayla Miracle (62kg), Macey Kilty (65kg) and Brooklyn Hays (72kg) won gold medals to help the USA win the women's team event with 205 points. Rio 2016 champion Maroulis won her first Pan American title since 2012 by defeating 2023 Pan American Games champion Giulia Penalber of Brazil.

Canada, with two gold medals, finished second with 140 points. Laurence Beauregard (59kg) won her third Pan American title and Olivia Di Bacco (68kg) became a double Pan American champion after 2023 Pan American Games champion Soleymi Caraballo withdrew from the final.

Ecuador had three champions and finished third in the team standings, 35 points behind Canada. Jacqueline Mollocana (-50kg), Lucía Yépez (-53kg) and Genesis Reasco (-76) were all medallists at the 2023 Pan Am Games and now topped the podium at the Pan American Championships. Reasco avenged a semi-final loss to Colombia's Tatiana Renteria in Santiago.

The hosts had two Greco-Roman champions, but it wasn't enough to win the team title. Marco Garcia Alvarez (-55kg) and Alexis Vargas Ramirez (-72kg) won gold medals in the non-Olympic weight categories. The USA had six finalists, but only two of them, Hayden Tuma (-63 kg) and Alejandro Sancho (-67 kg) returned with gold medals.

Kamal Bey (77kg), the returning champion from 2023, lost in the semi-finals to eventual champion Jair Cuero Munoz of Colombia and took bronze. The USA team finished on top with 183 points ahead of Mexico and Brazil.

Brazil, Cuba, Venezuela, Honduras and Chile all won gold medals. Venezuela's Raiber Rodriguez was the best in the 60kg, former Russian Sosruko Kodzokov won gold for Brazil in the 82kg, Daniel Gregorich Hechavarria (Cuba) won back-to-back titles in the 87kg and Kevin Mejia (Honduras) won his third Pan American title in the 97kg.

In the 130 kg category, Cuba's Oscar Pino Hinds won a close battle against former Cuban Yasmani Acosta in the group stage. Both reached the final before Pino Hinds withdrew due to injury, leaving the gold medal to Acosta, who has represented Chile since 2017. It was the 35-year-old's first Pan American title since 2011 and his first under the new flag.
