Russia's freestyle wrestlers will not take part in the 2024 European Wrestling Championships with a full squad. Earlier it was reported that seven members of the national team had been refused visas by the Romanian embassy in Russia.

The seven included double Olympic champion Abdulrashid Sadulaev (97kg) and Olympic champion Zaur Uguev (57kg). Only Abasgadzhi Magomedov (61kg), Gadzhimurad Rashidov (65kg) and Magomed Kurbanov (92kg) were granted visas.

Sadulaev was eventually granted a visa, but the other six will not be taking part in the championships. The national team coaches have replaced three athletes - David Baev, Khalid Iakhiev and Artur Naifonov. They will be replaced by Imam Ganishov (-74kg), Akhmed Usmanov (-79kg) and Arslan Bagaev (-86kg).

Alikhan Dzhabrailov, who was Sadulaev's back-up in the 97 kg category, will compete in the 130 kg weight category. The Russian national team will have no participants in the 57 kg and 70 kg categories.

The Russian athletes will compete in Bucharest as independent neutral athletes. The freestyle wrestlers will take to the mat on Saturday and Sunday.
