The AJP Tour UAE National Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2024 - Gi concluded on Sunday at the Mubadala Arena in Zayed Sports City, with Commando Group taking first place.

The event, organised by the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation (UAEJJF) in association with the Abu Dhabi Jiu-Jitsu Pro (AJP), featured competitions in the amateur and professional divisions on the final day, with A.F.N.T finishing second and Sharjah Self-Defence third. 

Friday saw the Kids, Infants and Juniors competitions with UAEJJ Arena Academy taking first place, Sharjah Self-Defence second and Palms Sports third. The Teens and Masters competitions were held on Saturday and Commando Group topped the medal table, pushing A.F.N.T into a close second place, while Al Jazira Jiu-Jitsu Club secured the third place. 

The competitions, held from 2-4 February, were attended by dignitaries, including H. E. Abdulmunem Alsayedmohamed Alhashmi, Chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, President of the Asian Jiu-Jitsu Union, and Senior Vice President of the International Jiu-Jitsu Federation; H. E. Mohamed Salem Al Dhaheri, Vice Chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation; H. E. Yousef Al Batran, Board Member of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation; Fahad Al Shamsi, Secretary General of the UAE and Asian Jiu-Jitsu Federations said, Mohammed Al Muhairi, Senior Vice President, Business Support, ADNOC Offshore and officials from participating clubs and academies. 

Fahad Al Shamsi, Secretary General of the UAE and Asian Jiu-Jitsu Federations said: "The AJP Tour UAE National Jiu-Jitsu Championship met our organisational and technical objectives and attracted a large audience and media attention. It showcased world-class competition and allowed local and international athletes, especially in the black and brown belt divisions, to test their skills and assess their physical and mental readiness at the start of the new season."

"The championship, which was the first event in the UAEJJF’s calendar, boosted the athletes' optimism for what promises to be an action-packed season and served as a platform for discovering new talent. Over the three days, we witnessed impressive performances from emerging athletes who have great potential for growth and professional careers in the sport." 

Al Shamsi went on to praise the outstanding performance of Emirati athletes, particularly in the professional category, stressing that the UAE continues to produce champions and is at the forefront of promoting jiu-jitsu at an international level. 

For his part, Tareq Al-Bahri, General Manager of the AJP, noted that the increased participation of athletes in the championship shows that clubs and academies recognise the role of the championship in raising the physical and mental level of athletes, as well as in developing and refining their skills through exposure to strong players with long careers and experience.   

"Athletes and clubs try not to miss the AJP Tour UAE National Jiu-Jitsu Championship, as it offers 1,000 AJP ranking points for the first place finishers, helping them to improve their rankings in their respective weight and belt categories. This will help them qualify for the Abu Dhabi World Jiu-Jitsu Awards at the end of the season, which will recognise the best individual winners, as well as the best local and international clubs and academies. The accumulation of ranking points will also help the athletes with other benefits, such as eligibility for travel concessions during the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship," added Al Bahri. 

The Commando Group made a significant impact on the tournament with the participation of more than 200 athletes in various categories, including the professional category.

Commando Group coach Thiago Barreto said: "I am proud of the performance of our athletes at the AJP Tour UAE National Jiu-Jitsu Championship. I would like to express my gratitude to the UAEJJF for organising this championship, which provided an unparalleled experience for the athletes and fans alike." 

"I believe that the impressive performance of the Commando Group is due to the dedication of the athletes, their sacrifices, and their desire to raise the level of their technical skills. Our players deserve the title, as they have performed outstandingly and demonstrated remarkable technical ability and determination," he explained. 

Brazilian Christian Lara, who won gold in the Men's Gi/Brown/Professional/69kg division representing the Commando Group, said: "I could not be happier to win the gold medal at the AJP Tour UAE National Jiu-Jitsu Championship. I competed against some of the most brilliant players in the world, and the competitive atmosphere at the arena was amazing. I am sure it will improve the physical and mental aspects of preparing for future tournaments."

Mohammed Saeed Alketbi of Al Ain Jiu-Jitsu Club, who won gold in the Men's Gi/Purple/Professional 56kg division, commented: "I participated in the championship because it is a good opportunity for me to achieve full physical and mental readiness before participating in the upcoming international tournaments. I am very happy to have gained 1000 AJP ranking points and look forward to adding more in the coming days".
