Retired Cuban judo and Olympian Maricet "La Mole" Espinosa has died at the age of 34, according to NBC News.

The Pan American Judo Federation said in a statement on Monday: "It is with deep sadness that we bid farewell to a legend of Pan American and Cuban judo. Maricet Espinosa, affectionately known as 'La Mole,' leaves behind an indelible legacy. Two-time Pan American champion, world medallist and Rio 2016 Olympian representative. Rest in peace, dear Maricet," read the organisation's statement.

Espinoza died off the island on Sunday after suffering a heart attack. She was reportedly suffering from complications following breast augmentation surgery.

She had won the Pan American Championships in 2013 and 2014. In 2016, she won the silver medal at the same competition. She went to the Rio Olympics and competed in the 63 kg weight category, defeating Nepal's Phupu Lamu Khatri before losing to Israel's Yarden Gerbi in the second round.
