Brazil's victory against Chile in the women's handball semi-finals at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago was ended early due to a water leak in the arena.

Host nation Chile have never medalled in women's handball at the Pan American Games, but have enjoyed a fine run to the last four where they faced Brazil, winners of the last six editions, at the Gimnasio Polideportivo de Viña del Mar.

Brazil had dominated the contest and led 30-10 approaching the midway point of the second-half.

However, the roof of the venue began leaking rainwater, leading to a pause in play and attempts to dry the playing surface.

After 10 minutes, Uruguayan official Rolando Ferrés Lavecchia declared the match over with 16 minutes and 12 seconds remaining, the result standing at 30-10 given Brazil's big lead.

Adriana Castro had led the Brazilian charge during the match with 11 goals from 12 shots.

Brazil are set to play Argentina in the final, with Chile facing Paraguay in search of a historic bronze medal playoff.

Argentina had overcome Paraguay 28-18 in the first semi-final.

The coastal city of Viña del Mar hosting handball matches at Santiago 2023 is around 120 kilometres west of the Chilean capital Santiago.
