Neutral athlete Thomas Richard Dardour and Germany's Nicole Holzmann sealed savate success as the sport experienced its first day at the Riyadh 2023 World Combat Games.

Holzmann dominated South Korea's Kim Eun-jung in the women's canne de combat final with a 3-0 win.

She triumphed in each round to take the gold medal while bronze went to Finland's Anna Marjatta Maekinen.

Maekinen beat Mauritius' Lindy Ursula Bhantooa to make the podium, also by a 3-0 scoreline.

Dardour then emulated Holzmann's triumph as he beat Michal Vrastil of the Czech Republic 3-0 in the men's canne de combat final.

They were joined on the podium by German Thomas Christoph Horstmeyer who beat Kee Eun-suk of South Korea 3-0 for bronze.

The Philippines, Malaysia, and Hong Kong all reached the top of the muaythai podiums as the sport was also contested for its first day in Riyadh.

Hong Kong's Ka Chun Mok was the first victorious athlete as he downed Indian Mohit Verma in the men's wai kru final.

It was a closely fought battle but Mok eventually prevailed with 8.87 points to his opponent's 7.90 in the non-contact discipline.

Mok and Verma prevailed in the semi-final with respective scores of 8.43 and 7.67 to leave the Czech Republic's Tomas Karel Bartak behind on 6.00 points.

Malaysian Jia Chi Yan and Islay Erika Bomogao of the Philippines posted 9.40 and 9.26 totals in the women's wai kru semi-final to advance to the decider.

An 8.10 total from Saudi Arabian Atheer Abudlaziz Al Barakal and 6.50 from Kazakhstan's Alyona Ozheredova saw them eliminated.

Yan then bettered her score in the gold medal-match with a remarkable total of 9.50 to edge Bomogao's improved 9.36.

The Philippines eventually secured gold as they topped the mixed muaythai wai kru final standings on 9.20 before their B side made it a one-two finish with 9.03 points.

Malaysia's 8.83 sealed the bronze medal.
