Italy won a pair of gold medals on the opening day of the International Judo Federation Abu Dhabi Grand Slam.

World number one and world bronze medallist Assunta Scutto won the women's under-48 kilograms division at the Jiu-Jitsu Arena in the UAE capital, thanks to a seoi-nage over Turkey's Sila Ersin in the final.

Bronze medals went to Blandine Pont of France and Azerbaijan's Leyla Aliyeva.

The Italians also celebrated in the women's under-52kg which was won by two-time Olympic medallist Odette Giuffrida.

She achieved waza-ari against Germany's Mascha Ballhaus for gold, as bronzes were won by Yeqing Zhu of China and Naomi van Krevel of the Netherlands.

In the men's under-60kg, France's Cédric Revol took the title with a waza-ari in golden score over Brazil's Matheus Takaki.

Spain's world champion Francisco Garrigos gained bronze alongside Ayub Bliev, a Russian allowed to compete neutrally amid the invasion of Ukraine.

Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Vazha Margvelashvili won the men's under-66kg with a waza-ari in golden score over Uzbekistan's Mukhriddin Tilovov.

There was a home bronze for Narmandakh Bayanmunkh of the UAE, with Erkhembayar Battogtokh of Mongolia also making the podium.

In the women's under-57kg, an all-Canadian final was won by 2021 world champion Jessica Klimkait over reigning world champion Christa Deguchi.

Jessica Lima of Brazil and Kseniia Galitskaia, a neutral Russian, won bronze.

The Grand Slam continues tomorrow.
