Virat Kohli fired India to a four-wicket victory over New Zealand in Dharamsala to take sole control of pole position in the International Cricket Council Men's Cricket World Cup.

He hit two sixes and eight fours en route to scoring 95 runs as the hosts chased down a target of 274 at the HPCA Stadium.

Kohli now has 354 runs at an average of 118 in the tournament but fell just short of his 49th one day international century which would have equalled compatriot Sachin Tendulkar's record.

Mohammed Shami starred with the ball as he claimed five wickets for 54 runs to help India become the only unbeaten side left in the group stage after five matches.

"Mohammed Shami took his opportunity with both hands," said India's captain Rohit Sharma.

"He is a class player, with so much experience and I am very happy for him.

"Our bowlers pulled it back nicely for us, and they deserve a lot of credit because it was a great effort to reduce them to less than 280.

"Virat has done it for us so many times.

"He is a calm head and just what we needed in that situation."

Daryl Mitchell's 130 and 75 from Rachin Ravindra helped the Black Caps recover from two early dismissals with a third-wicket stand of 159.

Devon Conway and Will Young were seen off with a duck and 17 runs to their names, respectively, before the top-scoring pair came in.

However, New Zealand took the foot off the gas in the latter stages of the first innings and were left regretful.

"I thought we played reasonably well," said New Zealand captain Tom Latham.

"Towards the back 10 overs, we didn't quite capitalise on the position we were in but credit to India for how they bowled.

"Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell played really well to set us up for the last 10 but we couldn't capitalise.

"We probably left a few out there.

"With the ball, we went past the bat a few times in the first 10 or 15 overs but just couldn't get the wicket and they formed partnership after partnership."

Competition is set to continue tomorrow as Afghanistan are scheduled to play Pakistan at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
