The World Karate Federation (WKF) has hailed refereeing activities prior to and during the African Championships in Casablanca as an indicator of increasing levels of officiating quality on the continent.

The event took place last week in the Moroccan city following a refereeing course which prioritised teaching the unification of criteria and the application of updates in the competition system.

It was conducted by African Karate Federation (UFAK) Referee Commission chairman Zitouni Metyout and supervised by the WKF Referee Commission chairman Javier Escalante and WKF Referee Commission secretary Fariba Madani.

The UFAK Referee Commission suggested the implementation of using images to identify each athlete on the officials' tablets and software programmes to enhance the accuracy of in-competition decisions.

More than 110 referees and judges officiated at the African Karate Championships in Casablanca which continued the judging unification process that the WKF is implementing worldwide.

"The standardisation of refereeing at our events around the world is one of the most ambitious initiatives of the WKF in terms of competition.

"Initiated last year, the project is achieving great results thus far, and the championships in Casablanca are an example of these accomplishments.

"The success of the progress of refereeing around the world and more specifically in Africa is due to the efforts of the UFAK Referee Commission and African Referees, with the addition of the expertise of the WKF Referee Commission headed by Javier Escalante.

"Our gratitude goes to Mr Escalante, Ms Madani and Ms Dajcman for making this success possible."

Karate made its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, and is seeking a return as an additional sport at Los Angeles 2028 after missing out on Paris 2024.
