Ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities since May 3 has led to many believing the state is on the brink of a civil war.

Over 150 people have lost their lives so far due to violent clashes with many more injured.

A 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised on May 3 to protest the Meitei community's demand for tribal status.

Meiteis, mostly living in Imphal valley, make up for around 53 per cent of Manipur's population, with Nagas and Kukis who reside in the hill districts and are the predominant tribal communities, constituting 40 per cent.

Majority of the Meiteis follow the Hindu faith, while Kukis believe in Christianity.

Modi and his ruling right-wing and pro-Hindutva Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been criticised for remaining silent as the violence continues.

Chanu, a world and Commonwealth champion, who is currently training in the United States appealed to the Prime Minister to bring an end to the conflict.

The 28-year-old Tokyo 2020 silver medallist also described the helpless situation that athletes in the state are facing.

"The conflict in Manipur is going to complete three months but peace is yet to return," she said via a video on Twitter.  

"Many players have not been able to train because of this conflict and there has been disturbance in the study of students.

"Many lives have been lost and many houses have been burnt down.

"I want to appeal to the Prime Minister and Home Minister to bring an end to this conflict as soon as possible and save all the people of Manipur and bring back the peace which was prevalent earlier.

"I have my house in Manipur though I am currently training in the USA to prepare for the upcoming World Championships and Asian Games.

"Even though I am not in Manipur, I always thought about when this conflict will end."

The outrage increased today as a video emerged of two Kuki women being paraded naked and being sexually assaulted by Meitei mob.

According to reports, the incident took place on May 4 in the Meitei-dominated district of Thoubal.

A case has been filed for gang rape and murder against the "unknown armed miscreants" but no arrests have been made yet.

The video sparked strong reactions on social media from politicians with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi saying Modi's silence has "led Manipur into anarchy".
