There were few bigger names on the Central American and Caribbean Games podium in San Salvador than Cuba’s Olympic and double world champion judoka Idalys Ortiz.

In the women’s over 78 kilograms, Ortiz, the Olympic gold medallist at London 2012, overcame Brigitte Carabali by ippon to add yet another title to her remarkable collection.

Venezuela’s Amarantha Urdaneta and the Domincan Republic's Moira Morillo both collected bronze medals.

Another Cuban, 2017 World bronze medallist Kaliema Antomarchi, won gold in the 78kg with an ippon after just 69 seconds against Eiraima Silvestre of the Dominican Republic.

Bronze went Sairy Colon of Puerto Rico and Brenda Olaya of Colombia.

In the men's events, Ivan Silva of Cuba defeated Roberto Florentino with an ippon for victory in the men's under-90kg.

Diego Diaz of Mexico and Daniel Paz of Colombia took the bronze medals.

Colombia’s Francisco Balanta threw Cuba’s Liester Cardona for a maximum ippon in the men’s under-100kg where Alexis Esquivel of Mexico and Juan Turcios of El Salvador both collected bronze.

In the men’s over-100kg, Cuba’s 2022 world champion Andy Granda won his fourth Central American and Caribbean Games gold medal by Hansoku-make against Mexico’s Sergio del Sol.

It was bronze for  Jose Nova of the Dominican Republic and Luis Amezquita of Venezuela.

Mexico’s success story continued in men’s modern pentathlon where Emiliano Hernández won the gold medal as compatriot Duilio Carrillo took the silver and Cuba's Lester Ders the bronze.

The success follows Mexico’s clean sweep yesterday in the women’s individual competition.

In men's gymnastics 20-year-old Diorges Escobar of Cuba followed up team silver with all around gold scoring 79.100 points in the individual all-around event, 

Silver went to Audrys Nin Reyes, the 2019 Pan American Games vault champion medallist, with 78.900 points.

Colombia’s Dilan Gimenez took the bronze medal with 78.150 points.

Women's all around gold also went to a gymnast who had won team silver, in this case Karla Navas of Panama. 

She scored 50.050 points to edge out Mexico’s Alexa Moreno into silver with 49.650.

Hillary Heron Soto, also representing Panama, claimed the bronze medal with 49.450 points.

In the pool Mexico's Maria Mata won gold in the women’s 200 metres butterfly in 2:09.31

Colombia’s Karen Durango claimed silver in 2:14.00.

There was bronze for Costa Rica’s Yanin Ortiz in a time of  2:16.30.

Omar Pinzon of Colombia won 100m backstroke gold in 55.56, his time almost a second outside his own Games record set in 2018,

Puerto Rico’s Yeziel Morales in 56.05 took silver and Diego Camacho of Mexico’s 56.10 was good enough for bronze. 

Cuba’s Elizbet Games came home to women’s freestyle gold in 55.57 ahead of Mexico’s Athena Meneses 56.39.

Bronze went to another Cuban Andrea Becali in 56.51.

Erik Gordillo, swimming under a neutral flag because his native Guatemala is currently suspended, came home in 4:21.12 to win the 400m individual medley.

Silver medallist Maximiliano Vega of Mexico was a long way back in 4:24.19

Another Mexican Hector Ruvalcaba finished in 4:26.58 for bronze.

In artistic swimming, Mexico’s Nuria Diosdado and Joana Jimenez won duet gold scoring 158.8000 points.

The silver went to Aruba’s Mikayla Morales and Kyra Hoevertsz, the niece of International Olympic Committee member Nicole Hoevertsz, who recorded 144.2333 points.

Estefania Roa Bernal and Melissa Ceballos scored 139.7396 points for the bronze medal.

Gold in the team technical final went to Colombia with a score of 205.8954 points.

Mexico’s 203.0925 points earned them silver and it was bronze for Aruba with 172.651.

On the penultimate day of weightlifting, Games record holder Mari Sanchez of Colombia lifted a total of 238kg for gold in the women’s 71kg division.

The silver medal went to Yeniuska Mirabal of Cuba with a total of 217kg.

Bronze was taken by Fransheska Matias of the Dominican Republic with 214kg.

There was more Colombian joy in the 76kg class after Hellen Escobar raised 240kg for the gold medal.

Silver went to Daiana Serrano of the Dominican Republic, Laura Peinado of Venezuela claimed bronze.

Venezuela’s World Champion Keydomar Vallenilla lifted a total of 377kg for gold in the men’s 96kg division,

Colombia’s Jhor Moreno took silver with 371kg and the bronze went to Olfides Saez of Cuba.

In the women’s 87kg class gold went to Yudelina Meija of the Domincan Republic with a total score of 254kg.

Dayana Chirinos of Venezuela totalled 244kg for silver and bronze went to Yeinny Geles of Colombia with 239kg.

The Games are due continue until July 8.
