Herrera, 40, and Gavira, 35, were the oldest of all the 44 teams that competed, using their experience to their advantage.

They defeated Dutch duo Stefan Boermans and Yorick De Groot in the final, winning by a scoreline of 21-17, 15-21, 15-12.

In third place was the Austrian pairing of Robi Seidl and Moritz Pristauz, who defeated Brazilians Evandro Gonçalves and Arthur Lanci in the third-place playoffs.

The Spaniards faced five tie-breakers in their six matches, managing to win them all.

"To get back to the podium after five years is incredible," said Herrera, who won his first international gold in 2004.

"We had some issues with the wind at the start but I feel that every day we got better used to it. 

"The final was an amazing battle. 

"We work hard to win every day, but didn't really expect to have such a good result here in La Paz."

Gavira, dealing with the death of his father, paid tribute to him as the match was played during Father's Day.

"I’ve had some difficult weeks, but once we decided to come to Mexico and I realised that the gold medal match would fall on Father’s Day, it became a goal for me to win a medal here," said Gavira.

"But not even in my best dreams I thought that the week could end like this. 

"This victory is for my father, I’m sure he’s really proud wherever he is now. 

"He would for sure want us to keep going and it was a big weekend for my family as I have a sister who's a soccer player and her team (Granadilla) just beat Real Madrid. 

"I couldn't honour him in a better way than I did today."

On the women's side, Kloth and Nuss defeated their compatriots Savvy Simo and Toni Rodriguez, winning in two sets 21-16, 21-13 to claim the title.

The Brazilian partnership of Tainá Bigi and Victoria Lopes finished third after beating Austrian siblings Dorina and Ronja Klinger to secure the last podium spot.

The winners were trailing until the middle of the first set, then took over the match-up on route to victory.

"What a battle," said Nuss, as the duo secured their third Beach Pro Tour gold.

"Hats off to our fellow Americans, what a game and what a tournament they had. 

"We got into the final knowing it was going to be a very tough match and only focused on our side of the net. 

"The atmosphere here in La Paz has been absolutely unreal and this is what beach volleyball is about. 

"We loved it."

Kloth added that it was a "very difficult" tournament.

"There were so many great teams playing and a lot of three-set matches that could really have gone either way," Kloth said.

"And the fans were amazing, there was such a great turnout to every single match that we played. 

"It was such a fun tournament."

The American duo played in 11 international tournaments together and have finished within the top 10 in all of them.

The Beach Pro Tour will continue in Mexico with the city of Tepic hosting an Elite16 tournament from March 22 to 26.
