Japan's men's foil team won gold in Cairo today ©FIE

Japan won the men's team foil tournament with Italy securing the women's team foil gold medal at the International Fencing Federation (FIE) Foil World Cup in Cairo.

Japan's team consisted of Kazuki Iimura, Kyosuke Matsuyama, Takahiro Shikine and Kenta Suzumura, who defeated Italy 45-43 in the final. 

This was Japan's first-ever gold medal in the men's team foil event.

Despite being ranked 15th in the men's team foil world rankings, they came up with the goods against an Italian team ranked second behind South Korea.

Third ranked France got the better of fourth ranked Poland 45-37 to claim the bronze medal.

Among women, the Italian team, consisting of Erica Cipressa, Martina Favaretto, Francesca Palumbo and Alice Volpo, defeated the United States 45-29 to win another title convincingly.

Italy had a run of dominance in the past, as they they won the women's team foil World Cup six consecutive times from 2009 to 2014.

Japan were able to secure another medal, as the women's team was able to defeat the French women's side 31-30 for the bronze medal.
