Rotterdam in The Netherlands is set to host the first European Para Championships this year, featuring 10 Para sports in one host city.

The event is scheduled to be held from August 8 to 20, with Sydney 2000 Paralympic champion Jeroen Straathof appointed as tournament director.

The programme consists of Para cycling, Para archery, Para badminton, wheelchair tennis, boccia, goalball, wheelchair basketball, Para judo, Para shooting and Para taekwondo.

"I am excited to start in service of this tournament," Straathof said.

"Bringing these beautiful para sports together in one tournament will cause a flywheel effect.

"We will give the para sports the attention they deserve by making connections, dreaming big, and taking chances where others only see limitations.

"I was active at the Paralympics of Sydney in 2000, but this is the first time that this many para sports will come to the people, instead of bringing the people to the para sports.

"The European Para Championships is unique in this aspect.

"Also, Rotterdam is the perfect host city for this.

"This element is appealing to me, and one of the strengths of this sport event of the highest level."

The Paris 2024 qualifying event will see the Rotterdam Ahoy act as the main venue.

Meanwhile, Kop van Zuid will host the Para archery finals while the wheelchair tennis will be playing at the Schouwburgplein.

The Dutch Government is fully behind the event, with Minister of Long-term Care and Sport Conny Helder claiming that The Netherlands Para sports the "international platform they deserve".

The European Para Championships is set to be a regular event on the calendar, preceding the Paralympics, and the organisers are focusing on a sustainable concept for the future editions.
