Swimming is set to return to its usual slot in the second week following on from diving at this year's World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, while high diving is back on the schedule.

The Japanese city had initially been due to host the World Championships in 2021, but this was twice pushed back because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Budapest stepped in to host an additional World Championships last year, but World Aquatics - then known as the International Swimming Federation (FINA) - opted to reverse the schedule by staging swimming and artistic swimming in the first eight days and diving and open water swimming in the following eight days.

High diving was left off the programme altogether in 2022.

Fukuoka 2023 is set to begin with an Opening Ceremony, artistic swimming and diving on July 14.

Events in both disciplines are due to run until July 22, with open water swimming taking place on July 15, 16, 18 and 20.

Swimming is scheduled from July 23 until the final day of the Championships on July 30, with high diving's return set to be held from July 25 to 27.

Women's and men's water polo is set to run from July 16 to 29, both tournaments taking place on alternating days.

The Fukuoka Marine Messe is due to host swimming, artistic swimming and water polo, with diving set to be held at the Fukuoka Prefectural Pool and the Momochi Beach Park the venue for open water swimming and high diving.

World Aquatics said it had finalised the schedule following "consultation with athletes, teams, broadcasters and other key stakeholders".

President Husain Al-Musallam said that revealing the schedule for the Championships was an important landmark.

"It’s with immense pleasure that we are able to confirm the competition schedule for the World Aquatics Championships Fukuoka 2023," the Kuwaiti official said.

"We have been eagerly awaiting our return to competing in front of the aquatic fans from Fukuoka, Japan, and the rest of the world.

"This competition schedule is an important step in preparing the showcase for aquatics athletes to shine.

"The flexibility and resolve that Fukuoka has shown to host these championships, following the global pandemic, has been extremely impressive and has been of great benefit to our sports and our athletes.

"We are once again looking forward with eager anticipation to seeing aquatics sport take centre stage again in Fukuoka."

Fukuoka previously held the World Aquatics Championships in 2001, when artistic swimming, swimming, open water swimming, diving and water polo were on the programme.

World Aquatics is also scheduled to hold a third World Championships in less than two years in February 2024 in Doha.

Constitutional changes approved at an Extraordinary General Congress last month led to FINA being rebranded as World Aquatics.
