The emblem, slogan and mascots of the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games - postponed until next year - are now under key trademark protection list, according to local reports.

The Hangzhou 2022 organising committee applied for "special symbol" recognition of the emblem, slogan and mascots in 2018 and has now obtained approval from the State Council.

A Hangzhou 2022 release says: "The inclusion was a reflection of the emphasis placed by the organising committee of the Hangzhou Asian Games on intellectual property protection.

"The emblem, mascots and slogan of the Games are more than mere intellectual property, but also the embodiment of the Asian Games spirit.

"Special symbols refer to the names and abbreviations, emblems, mascots and other symbols composed of characters and graphics used in national and international cultural, sports, scientific research and other social public welfare activities approved by the State Council.

"A special symbol is the result of intellectual labour and held by a specific organisation or activity.

"It may not be used by others without the permission of the rights holder."

The 19th Asian Games were postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions and will now be held in the eastern Chinese city from September 23 to October 8 next year.
