Promoters of "flying taxis" in the Paris area plan to showcase their service by carrying their first passengers during the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics.

A dozen of the electrically-powered, unmanned Volocopter vehicles are forecast to be operating from five bases in the Île-de-France region, Le Parisien reports.

It is at one of these bases, 35 kilometres north-west of Paris, that the airport manager Groupe ADP, the RATP state-owned public transport operator, the Île-de-France region and the German aircraft manufacturer Volocopter have been carrying out tests for a year on the vertical take-off and landing vehicles.

The vehicles, due to be integrated into both air traffic and the urban transport environments, are said to be four times less noisy than helicopters.

ADP says it is "is in the process of obtaining the European certification which will allow it to fly on all the vertiports" and is hoping for the go-ahead in 2024.

A typical price for a journey is being estimated at around €100 (£88/$103).

Paris is due to host the Olympics for the third time from July 26 to August 11 in 2024.

Airborne taxis were not in operation when Paris hosted the 1900 or 1924 Games.
