North Korea fire 100 artillery shells as tensions in region continue

Some news emerging here is that North Korea today fired around 100 artillery shells into waters off its west coast. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff announced it detected the shells shot into the Yellow Sea from Yonan County, South Hwanghae Province, starting at 12:30pm. None of them fell into South Korean waters, but it is a sign of increasing tension on the Korean Peninsula.

South Korea’s military has warned that the North must halt provocations that undermine peace and stability. The shortest direct distance from Seoul to the DMZ is less than 24 kilometres from the Korean Demilitarized Zone and North Korea's long-range artillery guns pose a serious security threat to the capital.

IOC President Thomas Bach made much earlier during his speech to the ANOC General Assembly of how the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang had bought the two Koreas together when they marched together at the Opening Ceremony and competed as one team in the women's ice hockey.

The harmony has not lasted long, with North Korea currently one of only two National Olympic Committees currently suspended by the IOC due to its failure to send a team to the re-arranged Olympic Games in Tokyo last year.

And they are still firing missiles...

As Bach concluded later during the General Assembly: "We left the front door open for them, but they chose not to walk through it."
