Five different nations won the first gold medals on offer in shooting competition at the South American Games in Paraguay's capital Asunción.

Julio Cesar Iemma Hernández of Venezuela topped the men's 10 metres air rifle podium at the Parque Olímpico Asunció's Shooting Range, beating Argentina's Alexis Exequiel Eberhardt 16-12 in the final.

There were two Argentinians on the podium in that event as Marcelo Gutiérrez finished third with 253.7 points in the ranking round.

Iemma had finished second with 256 points behind Eberhardt's 257.4 at that stage of the competition.

The women's 10m air rifle was won by Lima 2019 Pan American Games bronze medallist Fernanda Maria Russo Romero, who overcame compatriot Salma Loana Antorena 17-9.

Geovana Meyer of Brazil earned bronze.

Ecuador's Diana Cristina Durango Flores, a silver medallist at Lima 2019, triumphed in the women's 25m pistol, notching 13 points in the ranking match.

Maribel Pineda Calzadilla of Venezuela was second with nine, followed by Peru's Brianda Nicole Rivera Villegas with seven.

Asier Josu Cilloniz Parodi led a Peruvian one-two in the men's trap with 28 points in the final, Alessandro Alberto De Souza Ferreira Berisso his closest challenger with 22.

Franco Gonzalez Ripoll of Uruguay completed the top three with 15.

Chilean Pamela Victoria Salman Boghikian prevailed in the women's trap in a shoot-off against Brazil's Priscila Macedo Campos after both athletes had scored 22 points.

Peru's Valentina Sofia Porcella Bardelli was third with 14.

The South American Games is due to continue daily until Saturday (October 15).
