Chutinant Bhirombhakdi, the President of the Paralympic Committee of Thailand, has died at the age of 65.

Bhirombhakdi, who was also the executive chairman of the Boon Rawd Brewery, was confirmed dead yesterday in the United States, at a hospital in Boston.

Boon Rawd Brewery is known for brewing the beer Singha.

He served as the President of the Paralympic Committee of Thailand since 2009 and was pivotal to bringing Para sports events to the country.

International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) Asia Oceania secretary general Don Perriman was one of those to pay tribute to him.

"Our thoughts are with the Para sport community in Thailand, Mr Bhirombhakdi was not only a leader and sponsor for wheelchair basketball but a real friend and champion of the sport," said Perriman.

"He regularly supported and attended international wheelchair basketball competitions in Thailand.

"On behalf of IWBF, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and everyone closest to him in these difficult times."

At the ongoing Under-23 World Wheelchair Basketball Championship in Phuket, the Thai team observed a moment's silence prior to their game after the news.
