The men’s competition continued in Portugal with the remaining last 32 ties, with Florence starting the day with a victory over Australia’s Ryan Callinan.

Florence overcame United States’ Nat Young by 15.30 to 6.93 in the round of 16, which saw him set up a quarter-final contest with Japan’s Kanoa Igarashi.

A close contest saw Florence win the heat with a score of 12.93, with Igarashi exiting the event on 10.37.

Ferreira emerged as the winner of two contests today, with the Olympic champion first beating Miguel Pupo by 14.17 to 12.84 in an all-Brazilian last-16 contest.

He reached the semi-finals by scoring 14.67 to beat South Africa’s Jordy Smith, who finished with a score of 11.33.

Ferreira will now face compatriot Filipe Toledo, who overcame the United States’ Conner Coffin in the quarter-finals.

The second semi-final will see Florence meet Griffin Colapinto, following his win in an all-American tie against Kolohe Andino.

Colapinto achieved the highest score of the quarter-finals, finishing with a total of 17.83.

He was rewarded with the first perfect 10 of the season by the judges on one wave, after a backside full rotation.

Reigning WSL champion Carissa Moore reached the last four in the women’s competition.

The American produced a strong display in the quarter-finals to beat Tyler Wright, scoring 16.17 to the Australian’s 9.00.

Moore will now meet Brazil’s Tatiana Weston-Webb, who won by 14.66 to 9.73 against Australia’s India Robinson.

The second semi-final features Australia’s Stephanie Gilmore and the United States’ Lakey Peterson.

Gilmore earned a 12.50 to 11.76 win over France’s Johanne Defay in her quarter-final, while Peterson secured a 12.84 to 10.33 victory against compatriot Courtney Conlogue.

Competition is set to continue tomorrow.
