Britain's Elliot Hanson and the Russian Yachting Federation's Sergei Komissarov topped qualifying at the International Laser Class Association 7 World Championship in Barcelona.

After five races, with each sailor carrying their best four positions forward, the pair drew level with 15 points.

Hanson had enjoyed an excellent opening day of qualifying, finishing second and first in the blue fleet to enjoy a commanding lead entering the day's action.

He then followed that up with a fourth and eighth-place finish in the third and fourth races to total 15 points.

But Komissarov produced three sensational performances in his final three races today, finishing third, third and second to tie level with the Briton at the top of the standings.

Third in the standings is Thomas Saunders of New Zealand, just one point behind the leading duo.

Saunders had a third and fourth place after the first day of action, before following it up with a seventh and second today.

Rounding out the top five was Cyrpus' Pavlos Kontides, who won two of the five races but also had a 14th-place finish as his fourth-best score, dragging his overall points up to 21, and Britain's Sam Whaley, one point further back, with fifth, second, 12th and third-place finishes.

Whaley's 22 points was equalled by Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Tonči Stipanović of Croatia after he slipped to 11th in the final race of the day but had looked in position to challenge for the top spot before the slip-up.

Three races are scheduled tomorrow with sailors split into gold and silver fleets.
