Damian Warner recorded the fourth-highest decathlon points total of all time as he claimed a dominant victory at the World Athletics Combined Events Challenge in Götzis.

Warner broke his Canadian record tally by amassing 8,995 points to clinch a sixth title at the Hypo-Meeting.

Only three men - Frenchman Kevin Mayer, who holds the world record of 9,126, American Ashton Eaton and Roman Šebrle of the Czech Republic - have ever scored more points in a decathlon event.

Pierce LePage completed a Canadian one-two as he finished second on 8,534, while bronze went to Belgium's Thomas Van Der Plaetsen on 8,430.

Warner had set a Canadian long jump record and world decathlon best of 8.28 metres to establish a commanding overnight lead, which he converted into victory today.

His pursuit of another title in Gotzis suffered a setback when he threw 59.46m in the javelin, considerably below his personal best of 64.67m.

But he recovered with wins in the 110m hurdles, discus and 1500m to post his formidable tally, agonisingly short of the 9,000 mark that only Mayer, Eaton and Šebrle have surpassed.

Hungary's Xénia Krizsán triumphed in the heptathlon after a consistent string of performances on the second and final day at Mösle-Stadium.

Krizsán finished the competition with 6,651 points to beat Dutch rival Anouk Vetter, who was forced to settle for silver on 6,536.

American Kendell Williams was third having posted a score of 6,383 points.
