World Sailing has provided an update on the number of international Olympic sailing events that have either been postponed or cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

A total of five events have now been postponed, while a further two have been cancelled.

Among those postponed are the 470 World Championships, due to have taken place in Spanish city Palma from March 13 to 21, and the 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 European Championships, scheduled to have been held in Malcesine in Italy from May 11 to 17.

The Asian Championships, the continent's Tokyo 2020 Olympic qualifier set for March 15 to 22 in the United Arab Emirates’ capital Abu Dhabi, has been delayed until after Ramadan.

Additionally, the Semaine Olympique Francaise de Voile, due to have taken place in Hyères from April 18 to 25, has been postponed until the end of May, and the Kieler Woche, scheduled to have been held in German city Kiel from June 20 to 28, has been postponed until September 5 to 13.

The two events that have been cancelled are the Trofeo Princesa Sofia, due to have taken place in Palma from March 27 to April 4, and the World Cup Series Genoa event, an African, Asian and European Olympic qualifier scheduled to have been held in Italy from April 12 to 19.

World Sailing says it is reviewing all its events in collaboration with the organising authorities and the Olympic class associations.

The international governing body's Medical Commission is said to be in close communication with the World Health Organization and the International Olympic Committee Medical and Scientific Commission in order to closely monitor the development of COVID-19.

"World Sailing are in regular contact with its stakeholders and are providing advice and guidance to ensure the health and well-being of sailors worldwide," a statement reads.

World Sailing also recently cancelled its 2020 Extraordinary General Meeting, which had been due to take place in London on May 2.
