Former President Sarah Castle has resigned as a Board member of the United States' National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA).

It comes after she was appointed as an associate judge of the 16th Judicial Court in Kansas City, by Missouri Governor Mike Parsons.

Castle had been a member of the NWBA Board since 2009, becoming secretary in 2011.

She served as President between 2015 and 2019 before stepping down and being replaced by Tim Fox.

A former player, Castle competed at two Paralympic Games for the US and won gold at Beijing 2008.

At the age of 11 she became paralysed after being diagnosed with acute transverse myelitis.

"On behalf of the Board and NWBA membership, I would like to thank Sarah for her ongoing commitment towards making the NWBA a more sustainable organisation," said Fox.

"She has been instrumental in formalising the governance of the organisation, including the implementation of policies and procedures, employee handbook and significant updates to contemporise the by-laws."
