Kosovo's first Olympic champion Majlinda Kelmendi has unveiled a statue of herself in her hometown of Peja.

Kelmendi, who claimed the gold medal in the under-52 kilograms category at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, attended a ceremony in the Kosovan city this week.

International Judo Federation (IJF) President Marius Vizer and a host of current and former Government officials were also present at the unveiling.

"It feels great," Kelmendi said.

"I think they make statues for people when they die."

Kelmendi added: "I am happy that I can see my own statue and see how excited we are all, especially the children.

"I am very happy that I can be an inspiration for the young generation of my country."

Kelmendi, the first Kosovan to win an Olympic medal of any colour, is one of the country's most famous athletes.

The 28-year-old claimed the world under-52kg title at the 2013 World Championships in Rio and is a four-times European champion.

"Majlinda’s successes are the best inspiration for all sports in Kosovo, and you can be proud that one of the best athletes in the world carries the Kosovar flag," Vizer said.

"I want to congratulate all of you because you have a beautiful country with a great spirit and a bright future."
