The Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC) is to host a training workshop in strategic and operational planning.

Participants will include staff from the MOC itself and the country's Ministry of Sport.

National governing bodies for archery, basketball, taekwondo, cycling, judo, handball, table tennis, weightlifting and volleyball will also be involved.

It is hoped the workshop will lead to a "pool of resourceful people" being available to plan the future of sport in the country.

The event will take place at Sunbird Capital Hotel in capital city Lilongwe from February 17 to 23.

It will be run by an "international expert" from Zimbabwe and paid for through the Olympic Solidarity scheme.

"MOC will engage the international expert to train the individuals in the development and delivery of strategic plans," said MOC public relations officer Kythrina Phiri to Nyasa Times.

"The participants will undergo training for a period of five days, followed by an assessment for two days to enhance their skills and competencies as strategic planning facilitators where the successful trainees will be certified by MOC."

Phiri has acknowledged that most national governing bodies for sports in Malawi do not have any strategic or operational plans.

It is hoped that in future the course will be run by people from Malawi.

"That is why this is a training of trainers workshop," Phiri said.

Malawi first competed at the Olympics at Munich 1972, before missing the Montreal 1976 Games and the heavily-boycotted Moscow 1980.

They have appeared at every Summer Olympics since but have not won a medal.
