World Curling Federation President Kate Caithness has praised China’s gold medal winning-Paralympic wheelchair curling squad after they were won Best Team Performance Award at the 2019 Paralympic Sport Awards.
The team made up of skip Haitao Wang, third Jianxin Chen, second Wei Liu, lead Meng Wang, alternate Qiang Zhang and coach Qingshuang Yue were awarded the prize for outstanding performances at last year's Winter Paralympic Games in Pyeongchang at a ceremony in Bonn on Friday (October 25).
"Many congratulations to China who thoroughly deserve this recognition for their hard work and determination in achieving such a historic milestone, not only for curling but, for Chinese sport," Caithness said.
"This award will provide great motivation for them in the build-up to their home Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Beijing in 2022."
China beat Norway, 6-5 after an extra end, in the Paralympic gold medal final in Pyeongchang.
China’s Paralympic curling success was followed up with another gold medal victory, at last year's World Wheelchair Curling Championship in Stirling in Scotland.
Haitao Wang collected the Award in the German city.
"On behalf of the Chinese wheelchair curling team, I am very excited and honoured that I am in Bonn to receive the award," Wang said.
"I thank my National Paralympic Committee for their trust in me.
"I will return home to share the joy with my teammates and coaches.
"I think what makes our team special is our coach.
"He is extremely careful and patient instructing us during training and competitions.
"Additionally, our entire team treat each other like brothers and sisters.
"This Award means that our efforts have been recognised by the IPC and recognised by the world. I want to thank IPC and all our supporters."
