Japan thrashed defending champions United States 16-7 at the World Baseball Softball Confederation Under-18 Baseball World Cup in South Korea and are now the only undefeated team left at the tournament.

The Japanese success at the Gijang-Hyundai Dream Ballpark ended an American winning streak at the age-group event which stretched back to 2015 and came in wet conditions.

Nobody expected such a high-scoring contest as the US, who have won the last four tournaments, fell apart.

It leaves Japan on three victories from three in Group B as they chase a first title at the competition which stretches back to 1981.

In that time they have managed four silver medals and one bronze.

Chinese Taipei joined the Americans on a record of two wins and a loss as they pipped Spain 5-4 elsewhere in Group B.

Panama thrashed winless South Africa 17-2 and moved onto the same record as the Spanish, won one and lost two.

There is a four-way tie at the top in Group A as Australia, Canada, hosts South Korea and Nicaragua all sit with two victories and a defeat.

The Koreans enjoyed a fine 8-5 win over Canada today as Australia eased past winless China 13-2.

Nicaragua were beaten 4-2 by a Netherlands side who collected their first win of the tournament.

Group play continues in South Korea tomorrow with the fourth round of matches.

The US will look to bounce back against Panama with Japan taking on Chinese Taipei and South Africa meeting Spain in Group B.

In Group A the host nation will meet Nicaragua with Australia taking on Canada and the Dutch meeting China.

The top three teams in each group will advance to the super round where results carry over.
