July 23 -  A worker employed on building the Commonwealth Games Stadium to be used in New Delhi next year died today after a cement mixer fell on him.

Two other workers present at the site escaped with minor injuries.

A police spokesman said: "Lax safety measures at the construction site could be the primary reason."

The incident has raised further questions about the safety standards being employed at construction projects linked to the Commonwealth Games, especially as the pressure builds to get everything finished in time for the event, which opens on October 3 2010.

The was the fourth accident in the past 12 days at a construction site in India's capital, which has claimed seven lives and left 21 injured.

The three other accidents took place on Delhi Metro sites.

On July 12, six workers were killed and 15 injured when an bridge under construction collapsed in South Delhi's Zamrudpur.

The next day, four cranes snapped during debris clearance operations at the same site, injuring six workers.

Earlier this week, the President of the Commonwealth Games Federation, Mike Fennell, had praised organisers for the progress they have made and said that he was confident all the facilities would be completed on time.

The latest victim, identified only as 20-year-old Sunil, was working in the basement of a building at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, which is being given a facelift for the Games, when the cement mixer lost balance and fell on him.

The police spokesman said: "Sunil was crushed to death after the cement mixer, in which cement was being mixed for a pillar nearby, fell on him.

"The sand under the mixer shifted, which caused the mixer to lose its balance and fall on him.

"The other two workers, Nepal and Muktilal, escaped with minor injuries."

Sunil was rushed to the AIIMS Trauma centre where he was declared dead on arrival.

A investigation has now been launched against the driver of the cement mixer.

The police spokesman said: "We have filed an FIR (First Information Report) against the driver and investigations are on."

According to the police, all three victims worked for the Delhi-based construction company Arora Constructions, which had won the contract to build the stadium’s boundary wall.

The police have confiscated the concrete mixture truck, which belongs to UltraTech Company, and further investigations are on.
