July 23 - Sven Goran Eriksson (pictured) has backed Nottingham's bid to be a host city as part of England's plans to stage the 2018 World Cup after he was unveiled as the new director of football at Notts County FC.

The former England Manager said: "Of course, if it is going to be a new stadium or the old one is going to be rebuilt, why not have World Cup matches in Nottingham?"

The appointment of Eriksson, who was sacked by Mexico earlier this year after one season in charge of Premiership Manchester City, by League Two club Notts County has shocked the world.

Officials in Nottingham are now hoping that his presence and expertise can be harnessed to help their World Cup bid.

The Sheriff of Nottingham, Leon Unczur, said:"Sven's arrival is great for Nottingham's bid.

"With the high profile he has in the world of football, he can be a great ambassador for the city.

"His experience managing England at two World Cups will be a great asset to Nottingham as we fine-tune our bid.

"He know's exactly what national football teams expect from a host city in terms of base camps and training facilities."

Nottingham is one of 15 cities and towns across England hoping to play a part in the 2018 World Cup if England's bid to host the tournament is successful when world governing body FIFA votes in December 2010.
