A lack of wind caused the cancellation of the first scheduled race in the inaugural Nacra 15 World Championships at the Barcelona International Sailing Centre today.

A total of 60 teams from 18 countries have gathered for these Championships, due to take place until Friday (April 27) and which offer the chance to qualify for this year’s Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires.

Practice racing took place at the venue yesterday in ideal conditions, but the competitors will have to wait a little longer before taking to the water in earnest in the discipline that now forms the youth multi-hull option.

Seven places for Buenos Aires 2018 will be on offer in Barcelona to countries which have not already qualified through continental events.

The weather forecast for this week looks generally good.

Today’s racing was due to start at midday - four races scheduled back-to-back per day, through to Friday.

A total of 19 races are scheduled.

The goal for all is to be one of the 14 Nacra 15 teams representing their respective countries who will participate during the Summer Youth Olympic Games.

The teams must be mixed, with competitors need to be born between January 1, 2000, and December 31 2003.

The Nacra 15, started in 2016, is the "pathway class" to the Olympic Nacra 17 multihull.

The qualification system to participate at Buenos Aires 2018 is based on four qualification events.

In October last year in Medemblik, Switzerland and Tunisia qualified.

in November in the United States the home nation and Uruguay progressed.

In January home country Australia and Singapore joined them.

Argentina, as hosts, have a wild card to participate in the Summer Youth Olympic Games.
